Happy New Year to All!
These teams are out of contention for first place (4.5/6, but UTD-A has 5/5), but they qualify for the “final four” tournament held in the Spring. Texas Tech is looking better on boards 1, 2, and 4 against UTD-A (board three was just drawn).
It’s midnight. Texas Tech is preparing, hoping to catch UTD-A in favorable openings. These guys will really try to win the match and tie for first place!
Wallcharts for teams and players after round 5 (including team pairings) are posted under “round 6″. Team standings, including tie-breaks will be up tomorrow morning.
University of Texas-Dallas-A has defeated University of Maryland-Baltimore in a monumental struggle tonight. UTD-A beat UTB-A and UMBC-A by the score of 2.5-1.5, showing remarkable team spirit. They face Texas Tech in the last round with draw odds. Shall they lose, however, a four-way tie for first place is the most likely scenario. Tie-breaks are complicated and depend both on the scores of the opponents and the winning margin! UTD would rather avoid this lottery.

Brownsville’s board four had to demonstrate his ability to mate with Bishop+Knight to clinch match victory for his team. With four perfect scores remaining, three rounds should be enough to have a clear winner.
Team pairings are posted for round four (see Round Three team wallchart).
The favorites begin playing each other. There should be no more than 3 perfect scores at half way.
No upsets in the first round. Tomorrow is a big day as by round three the top teams will start facing each other.
